Ok, a little background about Caribou that I found online. The brand and company was founded in Minnesota back in 1992 by John Puckett and his wife. It started off as a small coffee shop aimed for downtown workers and now growing to this bigger retail site with 11 international markets spread all over the world, and Indonesia’s now included.
I don’t know how to express this but I was kinda happy knowing that they choose to open in Senopati (just beside Sake+ and across Anomali), tbh I don’t even know why I am happy, it’s just nice to see a good looking coffee shop stood gracefully in the busy Senopati road, and of course the fact that it’s new just made it better. You kinda get that “Starbucks” feeling once you entered their venue, but I tried my best to keep that away, but I think it’s because we’re so used at seeing and being at Starbucks.
My eyes went straight to the glass display as I noticed beautiful fresh pastries arranged and displayed neatly. I had this Tuna sandwich thing (but didn’t take any picture) and it was not bad at all! The tuna was generous and tasty. I initially wanted to have their coffee, but I was so tempted to try their Turtle Mocha (IDR 53k/medium) and Hot Chocolate (IDR 49k/medium) as I wanted to do a little comparison with Starbucks’.
So what about their venue? OK I LOVE IT! Sorry Starbucks’ but I must say that I like this particular Caribou outlet better. I have been to so many Starbucks’ outlets in Jakarta, not that they’re bad (not at all), but comfy wise, Caribou Senopati is damn comfy! The lighting was warm but brighter, more areas with sofas and groups, and even though the shop was packed on my visit, I still felt that sense of private that I really wanted in a coffee shop, and the music they’re playing was also quite nice. The only thing that wasn’t attractive enough for me was the fact that it was so lacking the spots with plugs, being someone who needed that extra “shock therapy”, I found that being a problem, hence today I had to share the spot with someone.
The ordering method was pretty much like the common coffee shops: you queue, pay then wait for your coffee. They have two floors here, the first floor is the one with more communal seatings and where you order your F&B, while the second floor is the one with private seatings for two, and an outdoor area for smokers.
I LOVE THEIR TURTLE MOCHA! It’s their signature drink here and it’s recommended by a friend of mine. When you order anything with chocolate here, you’ll be given three options: dark chocolate, milk chocolate or white chocolate for your drinks. I had the dark chocolate for my Turtle Mocha and I think it was a brilliant idea. The drink was very chocolaty, creamy, rich and the dark chocolate kinda dominated the drink, but still in a very enjoyable state, the only thing I wasn’t really fond of was the fact that it was a tad sweet for my liking. I opted for their medium (regular) glass, but it was like the size of Starbucks’ venti cup. I sat for like four hours while working on my stuff, kept on drinking while not realizing that I haven’t finished my drink, same thing happened to their hot chocolate, it was also rich and enjoyable and served searing hot, and I mean, really hot, but for their hot chocolate, I prefer Starbucks’.
I don’t know if most of the drinks here are also served cold, but when I ordered my Turtle Mocha, they asked me if I wanted it hot, iced or blended like fraps.
This is just a short review of their outlet in Senopati, I didn’t take a lot of pictures, but I will definitely go back to try their signature coffees and of course took more pictures! THANK GOD THEY OPEN EARLY (6:30 AM).
Thank you for reading guys!
PS: I LOVE their slogan: life is short, stay awake for it!
